Have you tried TDEPowersave -> Settings -> General (might not be exact
english name as I use different locale)

there is lid close, powerbutton etc. I disable everything but powerbutton
action. Then you can close lid and work on.

However I do not get the point with plug in external keyboard - you said
note book - why can you not access the keyboard on your notebook - you just
need to open the lid
