they are, at least on my machine, in /usr/share/icons/[theme]/cursors. 
weirdly, they have no extension, but i just now tried to open one in the 
gimp and it came right up. flipping it was easy. ah, but i then remembered 
there's more than that -- a trick pixel that is at the very point and that 
serves as the hotspot for making selections. and i do not know what we 
might do about that.
