Thanks for the help. In partitioning, I changed FS type from ext4 to btrfs, which removed the offset error problem. In comparison, btrfs looks like a good replacement for ext4. I considered using ext4 with LVM but think it's too much complexity for a single disk setup. Now to switch to Devuan, (with help of some previous posts) or at least remove systemd. Then to install TDE... Layout of external SSD.
