Most likely you'll need to delete the old settings and then start VLC, maybe it'll just work.
If not, then you have to play with the video settings in VLC or change them by hand. Look for these lines in .config/vlc/vlcrc:

# Maximum video width (integer)
#sout-transcode-maxwidth=0

# Maximum video height (integer)
#sout-transcode-maxheight=0
