So I finally found out that this is a bug in Ubuntu

The best workaround seems to be

Disable input methods globally if you don’t use them (this won’t prevent
e.g. the XKB-set Compose key from working), by adding this line to your
~/.xinputrc:

  run_im none

And everything is fine again.
