This is how I did it in an earlier version of konqueror

Within konqueror right click directory folder
- choose properties
- click the little button with the spanner icon
- go to the embedding tab
 -if treeview isn't at the top of the list then move it up to the top
 (if treeview IS at the top of the list then, 'Heuston, we have a problem' )
- ok it

That should permanently solve the default directory view.
