I mostly described what I do not clearly enough.

    - my disk is empty.

    - I install Kubuntu[1] 14.04 which ships KDE4

    - I need an internet connection to download and install trinity.

    - I add the relevant source.list file entries and install

    - I try to use the tdenetworkmanager and run into the problem
       reported.

In the past I always used this path successfully, just now it seems to
fail. I could use wicd as an alternatative, but I am really puzzled by
this behaviour.

Footnotes:
[1] two reasons not to try trinity live, first in the past I had
difficulties with trinty live, second KDE4 ships some useful stuff,
for example configuring the printer turned out easier in KDE4 than
     in trinty.
