What you have in mind are small one man projects. Big projects need a leader or they fail. A successful example is the Linux kernel with Linus torvalds. An unsuccessful example is freebsd and their ban on hugs. An example of failure in trinity, is the issue of renaming. No one is seeing long term consequences (distros don't like it), just the short term (just shove it in opt). The leader, should be above the crowd. Set long term goals. Take final decisions. See the whole picture of the project. Properly manage people and politics. Deal with other projects. etc.... Leadership matters. Strange group dynamics are involved.
