I have Ubuntu 15.04 (kernel version 3.19) running in a VM. I
successfully installed targetcli. However, in the menu (when I do
"ls"), I don't see "tcm-user" displayed as one of the backstores. My
understanding is that tcm-user is merged in kernel 3.18.

Do I need to manually download/build/install the corresponding kernel
module to enable tcm in user space?

Is there any cheat-sheet how to setup and configure
tcm-user/tcmu-runner to get familiarity with the feature?

Any pointers/help would be greatly appreciated.

There is an additional module that you (or the distro kernel) needs to build. Also, just because the kernel supports tcmu that doesn't mean userspace has caught up yet. Both targetcli and tcmu-runner need work, and then they need to be updated/added as packages by distros. In addition we're having to make some revisions to the kernel code, which has thrown everything on top into flux again.

Check back in 2-3 months, when the patient is off the operating table.
