I wanted to allow pings on a LAN server

I didn't do anything special to allow ICMP. I notice that one of your links suggests making the drop zone the default zone. That may be the source of the problem.

Try posting the output of "firewall-cmd --list-all-zones" and/or "iptables-save" to a pastebin for readers to inspect.
