Before bisecting, I tested my older kernels back to 3.8.9 (where
backlight didn't work). 3.8.9 didn't show any ^@ when using the
Brighter/Darker key combination. 3.9.4 (which was my first kernel
with working backlights) already shows the ^@, so I guess it's not
a kernel but a glibc regression.
