An updated ALPS mouse driver was merged in Kernel 4.9, which includes support for new ALPS SS5 devices. These devices were previously supported as generic PS/2 devices, but the new driver adds support for advanced mouse features such as scrolling. Unfortunately, the driver in 4.9 has a bug that causes some unexpected behaviors, particularly when the TouchPad and TrackStick are used at the same time. Commit 864db929 (Input: ALPS - fix TrackStick support for SS5 hardware) fixes that bug, but was not merged until 4.10-rc1.
