This is a note to let you know that I've just added the patch titled cred: switch to using atomic_long_t to the 4.14-stable tree which can be found at: http://www.kernel.org/git/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/stable-queue.git;a=summary The filename of the patch is: cred-switch-to-using-atomic_long_t.patch and it can be found in the queue-4.14 subdirectory. If you, or anyone else, feels it should not be added to the stable tree, please let <stable@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> know about it. >From f8fa5d76925991976b3e7076f9d1052515ec1fca Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Jens Axboe <axboe@xxxxxxxxx> Date: Fri, 15 Dec 2023 13:24:10 -0700 Subject: cred: switch to using atomic_long_t From: Jens Axboe <axboe@xxxxxxxxx> commit f8fa5d76925991976b3e7076f9d1052515ec1fca upstream. There are multiple ways to grab references to credentials, and the only protection we have against overflowing it is the memory required to do so. With memory sizes only moving in one direction, let's bump the reference count to 64-bit and move it outside the realm of feasibly overflowing.
