This is a note to let you know that I've just added the patch titled x86/srso: Fix vulnerability reporting for missing microcode to the 6.5-stable tree which can be found at: http://www.kernel.org/git/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/stable-queue.git;a=summary The filename of the patch is: x86-srso-fix-vulnerability-reporting-for-missing-mic.patch and it can be found in the queue-6.5 subdirectory. If you, or anyone else, feels it should not be added to the stable tree, please let <stable@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> know about it. commit 474e181b7dccd1c88f218c0261ab822905d4405d Author: Josh Poimboeuf <jpoimboe@xxxxxxxxxx> Date: Mon Sep 4 22:04:52 2023 -0700 x86/srso: Fix vulnerability reporting for missing microcode [ Upstream commit dc6306ad5b0dda040baf1fde3cfd458e6abfc4da ] The SRSO default safe-ret mitigation is reported as "mitigated" even if microcode hasn't been updated. That's wrong because userspace may still be vulnerable to SRSO attacks due to IBPB not flushing branch type predictions. Report the safe-ret + !microcode case as vulnerable. Also report the microcode-only case as vulnerable as it leaves the kernel open to attacks.
