This is a note to let you know that I've just added the patch titled x86/bugs: Optimize SPEC_CTRL MSR writes to the 5.10-stable tree which can be found at: http://www.kernel.org/git/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/stable-queue.git;a=summary The filename of the patch is: x86-bugs-optimize-spec_ctrl-msr-writes.patch and it can be found in the queue-5.10 subdirectory. If you, or anyone else, feels it should not be added to the stable tree, please let <stable@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> know about it. >From foo@baz Tue Jul 12 05:07:35 PM CEST 2022 From: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Tue, 14 Jun 2022 23:15:54 +0200 Subject: x86/bugs: Optimize SPEC_CTRL MSR writes From: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> commit c779bc1a9002fa474175b80e72b85c9bf628abb0 upstream. When changing SPEC_CTRL for user control, the WRMSR can be delayed until return-to-user when KERNEL_IBRS has been enabled. This avoids an MSR write during context switch.
