Your setup is set to German, but not to utf-8. As configuration documentation says $default_charset applies only to US English. You should convert translation to iso-8859-15 or utf-8, if you want to find euro in your ldap directory. You might be able to find MÃller, if ldap address book class is updated to do conversion from iso-8859-1 to utf-8. It is possible that $default_charset global value is not defined correctly or your SquirrelMail version is outdated. SquirrelMail should override configured $default_charset value with charset from translation, but it looks like it is not done in your case. Can you really find notorious MÃller in your LDAP?
