Squirrel mail log in problems

Hi I need some help every time I try to log on to squirrel mail in a web browser I get the following message

SquirrelMail version 1.4.7
By the SquirrelMail Project Team

ERROR

Preference file, ../../squirrelmail-data/Chris@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, could not be opened. Contact your system administrator to resolve this issue.

Go to the login page

Has anyone come across this before and what can I do to resolve it?it's just been happenig the last few days
