SquirrelMail does not produce such blue screens with an error message
like that.  Please provide more details of all the systems you are
using, including your browser, O/S, and all relevant server software
and configtest output.  Please refer to the mailing list posting
guidelines for how to submit a better help request.

You can install the Quick Save plugin.  You can also save manually as
a draft for longer, important emails such as that.
