Magic quotes should not trigger this error.

Could you provide more information about your setup?
* Webserver's OS and version
* PHP version
* SquirrelMail package version. You have SquirrelMail in
/usr/share/squirrelmail, so it is not standard 1.4.19 version, but something
packaged by your OS developers.
* output of phpinfo(). See http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/TestPHPSettings.
If you don't want to show all phpinfo() stuff, show local core and session
configuration values and list all enabled PHP extensions.
