1. Check if you can reproduce same issue in 1.4.19. If 1.4.19 works, then
1.4.20rc2 broke something.

2. Set IMAP server type to hmailserver or macosx. These types use quoted
strings instead of literals. You will have to limit your search to ASCII
symbols. SquirrelMail does not send literal strings correctly. 1.4.20rc2
rewrote that part of code, but rewrite continues to ignore rfc.
