What do you mean by "Rich Text"? The Microsoft Rich Text Format (often
abbreviated RTF), which is a document file format, or HTML?

The original design of the mail protocols is to send mail as plain text.
Later on people wanted to send mail in other formats (HTML being the most
common one). This led to a number of add-ons to the original design, and
the method chosen was to send other formats as attachments. If you want to
send a mail as HTML it will be sent as a plain text mail with an HTML
attachment.

Examine the body of a malfunctioning mail (you can do this by installing
and using the message_details plugins (included in SquirrelMail)). There
should be MIME parts in the body specifying the various formats used in
the mail you're trying to send. If the attachment is in HTML, SquirrelMail
should support it out of the box. If it's RTF you have to download it and
then open it locally on your computer. I'm not aware of a plugin to make
SquirrelMail convert and display RTF as HTML.
