In addition to the items mentioned by Chris, and Ben, your domain must have an DNS MX record pointing to the server you expect to be hosting mail. As a side, when sending mail, if there are delivery issues, you should get a non-delivery-notification (NDN) from the sending SMTP server. You don't tell us what that error is.
