I can telnet to my SMTP server with this command:
telnet 127.0.0.1 990 -l postmaster
and I got a prompt with my hostname and a status code of 220. This means
that I was successful. Anything else to try?

You aren't using version 1.5.0 (and that's good). You are using 1.5.2
(SVN).
