For 1.4.x, just try them all.  IIRC, Blue Steel and Sand Storm are
alright, and maybe Silver Steel, but I don't switch themes too much
myself, so someone else might offer better advice.  For 1.5.2+, you
can design your own look and feel to substantially "prettify" the
interface to your liking.

Also for 1.4.x, you'll want to install the Message Flags & Icons plugin.
