Seems like the browser is not correctly sending the right MIME type
info to the server with the file upload.

Either the resource fork is missing (but still, who wants an
AppleDouble mess anyway?) or the browser is not doing the right thing
with the data fork when sent.  But if this happens with Thunderbird
too, it seems to be a bigger problem with the user's system.  Maybe
some Mac expert can explain, or maybe you'll need to spend some
sleepless nights on Google.  Please keep us posted after you get some
sleep!
