Enable SMTP auth in SquirrelMail configuration. It is set in conf.pl -> 2.
Server Settings -> B. SMTP settings -> 7. SMTP Authentication.

SquirrelMail supports login, cram-md5 and digest-md5.

Citadel SMTP service supports LOGIN and SASL PLAIN.
