In addition to changing the config settings, I added this to the httpd file
in apache:

ServerName localhost
    Alias /squirrelmail /usr/local/squirrelmail/www
    <Directory /usr/local/squirrelmail/www>
      Options Indexes
      AllowOverride none
      DirectoryIndex index.php
      Order allow,deny
      allow from all
    </Directory>
