How many emails are in the folders, what IMAP server are you using and how
does it store the messages? SM is a front end to an IMAP based mail
system. I got a major speed increase going from UW mbox to dovecot mdir
setup because it didn't have to read each mail file to determine how many
emails were in a given mailbox. If you have a very large number of emails
an maildir set up can fail (we had someone who forgot to purge his trash)
had to go in and wipe the directory and let dovecot rebuild its pointers.

If you want more than general guesses please provide details of your setup
beyond SM.
