Install PHP cache (apc or zend optimizer) to reduce peak memory usage.

Enable server side sorting in SquirrelMail configuration, if your IMAP
server supports it.

If IMAP server does not support SORT extension, get better server or make
sure that your mailbox is not sorted. Sorting is controlled with 'sort'
setting stored in user preferences. 6 is used for unsorted mailboxes. In
stable SquirrelMail versions this setting controls sorting in all user's
mailboxes. Sorting can be enabled by default, if you have default
preferences from older SquirrelMail versions.
