I have now updated 2 of my machines from slackware 11.0 to slackware  
12.0, and I have updated some packages from other distributions (it's a  
complete update of a special schoolserver distribution) - the error has  
disappeared.

No - I won't test all the packages (more than 200) which has done (or  
repaired) this nasty behaviour.
