SquirrelMail is simple imap client. There is nothing SquirrelMail specific
in IMAP authentication.

Could you test IMAP connection with telnet?

telnet your-imap-server 143
> some response by imap server
A01 login your-username your-password
> response from imap server
A02 select inbox
> information about inbox status
A03 logout
> connection closed

Do same thing from webserver and from your workstation. Compare response
times. If response times are similar, then SquirrelMail login delays might
be caused only by PHP session issues in Apache. Or there are some quicks
in QmailLDAP + ADS setups. I don't see slowdowns in QmailLDAP + OpenLDAP.

If you use qmail-ldap service scripts, you must turn off pop-before-smtp
support with NOPBS environment variable or have working pbs configuration.

Make sure that local connections are not slowed down by your firewall or
some security libraries. For example by SELinux.
