IMAP servers generally don't just drop connections without a reason. This can be caused by a limit imposed by your IMAP server on the number of connections. For example, courier-imap has MAXPERIP setting in the imapd file, uw-imap is controlled by (x)inetd.d which I believe also allows you to limit the connections.
