As has been mentioned, base64 is likely the possible cause.  As a
general rule of thumb, observation has shown that base64 encoding of
attachments increases the attachment size by approximately 30%.  8MB +
30% ~= 10MB.  Add on the size of the actual email content too, and
it's easy to see how it can be pushed over the edge.

This is why email is the worst possible way to send large files, use
FTP.
