I think you could try to override the username and password with a
plugin in the compose_send hook, but that would probably have very bad
consequences after the mail is sent.  You might be able to hack in a
compose_send_after hook to reset the user/pwd, but this just seems
like asking for trouble.

I believe the intended meaning is that because SM 1.4.x does not
support the $smtp_sitewide_xxxx functionality, you can mimic it by
using the local relay to remap all your local usernames to the same
single one required by your ISP, but that's a lot of work when you
might just try 1.5.1 instead.
