See TLS, SSL and STARTTLS terms.

If PHP program does not use imap extension, it can connect to TLS and SSL
servers since PHP 4.3.0, if openssl extension is available. In PHP 4.x
openssl extension must be compiled statically.

STARTTLS protocol extensions can be used in PHP 5.1.0 and later.

SquirrelMail 1.4.x can secure connections with TLS. It can connect to TLS
or SSLv3 servers.

SquirrelMail 1.5.1 and later can secure connections with TLS or STARTTLS.
