centos4 sendmail problem, curious! "Server replied:"

I've looked at about 100 different web pages using squirrel mail . org search, google, and centos 4.

I've got centos4 and squirrel mail 1.4.8.  It receives and manages email just fine.

However, pressing "Send" gets back "Error:"  "Server replied:"

That is all.  There is no error message in /var/log/maillog, in the web server log, there is just a "POST compose.php" (I cut out a lot of directory stuff in that)

There are no errors in /var/log/messages, /var/log/secure, httpd/error_log.

This is the most silent error I've ever seen.  I looked at the code and couldn't see anything obvious.  Pine works just fine, and can send emails just fine.  A plain user can send mail by running sendmail directly.  The directory path to sendmail looks just fine in the config.php.

Can anyone give me any clues???

thanks,
wade
