SquirrelMail doesn't have that functionality per se, but there are several plugins that can be used to manage a server side solution [1]. Usually a client, such as SquirrelMail, isn't always running whereas the server is. That's why the vacation/out-of office daemon must be running at the server. The SquirrelMail vacation plugins provide a more user friendly interface. Just make sure that you must pick the plugin corresponding to the daemon you have installed at your particular system.
