If server side sorting is not used, SquirrelMail internal sorting can have memory issues with IMAP folders that store 3000 or more messages. If server side sorting is used, courier IMAP might start dropping connection at 64K-100K messages. IMAP capability command allows to check IMAP features supported by used IMAP server.
