Default preferences for MySQL backend

According to the following references:

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.mail.squirrelmail.devel/6272/match=dbprefs
http://www.squirrelmail.org/wiki/DefaultPreferences

I should be able to set user preference defaults for any users logging
into squirrelmail for the first time. The following variable in
db_prefs.php is the one I believe must be added to:

var $default = Array('theme_default' => 0,
                      'show_html_default' => '0');

Any preferences I add above (like 'sort' => 0) do not get written to my
db userprefs entry nor does the 2 prefs above. Has anyone successfully
used/added default preferences to their database backend? I don't see
any php errors when trying this out.

I'm running:
courier-imap-3.0.4
php-common-4.3.10
apache-module-php-4.3.10
apache-1.3.31
Solaris 9
squirrelmail-1.4.7
Too many plugins to list...

Note: The default preferences that do get added for a new account are
the hililist and javascript_on prefkeys.
