For http:// URLs the peer security does not matter, for https:// the peer requires TLS connections to be used. Other than that limit they should behave the same.

That said there are some unresolved things related to <https://bugs.squid-cache.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4648> which can prevent HTTPS doing some things one would expect to be possible.
