Hi - thanks for the reply.

I misread the FAQ - by configuring the server it actually meant
configuring the client to access the server using the file

  ~/.subversion/servers

For example,

[global]
# http-proxy-exceptions = *.exception.com, www.internal-site.org
http-proxy-host = address
http-proxy-port = port
# http-proxy-username = defaultusername
# http-proxy-password = defaultpassword
# http-compression = no
