This is actually a IE setting - goto

Tools -> internet options, select the Advanced tab, scroll down the list
until you get to the security section, untick "Enable Integrated Windows
Authentication", click OK and then restart the browser (make really sure
all IE windows are gone).  It seems if this option is ticked IE won't
try Basic auth.
