504 = gateway problem.
and what do you see on the origin server logs at this time?
what happens when you try to fetch the object with wget\curl or any
other command line tools?
these messages sometimes appear also in siblings (host02 and host03)
When this happens, the siblings is going to get a new copy of the object
Have you tried to look at the store.log when it happens?
Maybe raise debug sections level?
