My temp. workaround is like this:

#RKA+: Make sure, that 1MB objects really are cached to disk; Temp.
workaround 
maximum_object_size_in_memory 1 MB
#RKA-
maximum_object_size 1 MB
cache_dir ufs /usr/local/squid/var/cache/ufs 500 16 256 min-size=31001
max-size=1048576
cache_dir rock /usr/local/squid/var/cache/rock 100 min-size=1000
max-size=31000

Seems to do the trick.
