Excuse the basic question but is adding comments to external files
allowed in squid. For example...

acl blockedsites dstdomain "/etc/squid3/blockedsites.txt"

cat /etc/squid3/blockedsites.txt
# block facebook
.facebook.com

I googled and found examples where comments were used but nothing
conclusive to say it's ok. I have tested and it appears to work fine
but want to be sure.

Thanks

May depend on your squid version. The 3.x series allow '#' comments in the sub-files.

I don't think the original 2.5 parser did though, there are quite a few directives in the main squid.conf which use that older parser and break with trailing # comments.
