Re: Multiple squid using same storage

It is technically feasible to share one or more fiber-attached
disks between multiple hosts when used with a disk array (a lot
more expensive and a lot faster than a single host-attached disk).
The more difficult part is to keep this shared disk synchronised
between hosts and to make sure that all instances of Squid
co-operate in keeping the data consistent.
What you are seeking is an advanced technology used by for instance
Oracle.

Oracle has invested a very large number of hours in the development
of this technology and partners with disk array vendors who provide
technological assistance with the development.
Squid is developed by a small virtually unfunded team and does not have
the resources to develop this.

Note also that the gains of a shared storage are relatively small.

Disks can be a bottleneck for Squid. This is generally resolved by
using more disks.
It is difficult to make a recommendation without knowing parameters
of your environment like:
- number of users
- internet usage profile of users
- availability requirements

Dear all;

Did anyone tried setting up multiple squid servers sharing same storage (i.e Fiber Channel or iSCSI)? Well I'm planning for this setup and gathering data before purchasing the servers and storage devices.

Thank you and regards;

Hello Charbel,

Wouldn't you always have to rely on a network filesystem for that? Although the media can be shared, how would you mount the same filesystem across the nodes?
I would advise you to have a look into a cache sibling setup.
