I manually applied the patch - I couldn't be bothered with patch for a
simple #if removal. The symptoms have changed. We no longer get an
auth pop up but at the end of the upload the browser displays:

and the document is not shown in the list. So, the patch made a
difference but something else is amiss still.
Strange. I've never see that one before.
I think another trace of the request-reply sequence is needed to see if
there is anything different now and what.
