I have an ATA ST3250310AS, which I believe is 7200 RPM.
My current drive is as follows:
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda5 4956284 1483764 3216688 32% /
/dev/sda3 4956316 305608 4394876 7% /var
/dev/sda2 226042032 191956 214182472 1% /home
/dev/sda1 77749 17117 56618 24% /boot
tmpfs 475284 0 475284 0% /dev/shm

My current squid.conf shows:
auth_param basic realm ProxyPlayer proxy server
auth_param basic credentialsttl 2 hours
auth_param basic program /usr/lib/squid/ncsa_auth /etc/squid/squid_passwd
authenticate_cache_garbage_interval 1 hour
authenticate_ip_ttl 2 hours

use aufs instead if you are under Linux, otherwise use diskd for
cache_dir.
also a fast disk is helpful much (like a SAS disk with 15000 rpm).

2009/8/21 J Webster <webster_jack@xxxxxxxxxxx>:
What are some troubleshooting things to look for with squid performance?
I mainly use it to allow users to stream video content but when the
cache_dir is on it seems to perform worse than when off. When on the
video
pauses to buffer fairly frequently but not when the cahe_dir is off. This
shouldn't really be the case should it? Or is it the fact that it's
streaming content that might cause an issue?
My cache_dir was set to cache_dir ufs /home/squidcache 80000 16 256
