Squid is a web cache. It caches (cacheable) pages by default.

How about the about of memory RAM used by squid

http://www.squid-cache.org/Doc/config/cache_mem/ (but see http://wiki.squid-cache.org/SquidFaq/SquidMemory)

and the amount of disk available for cache?

http://www.squid-cache.org/Doc/config/cache_dir/

Do I have to set this up or not?

No.

If not, what are the default values?

8MB and 100MB for RAM and disk respectively.
