But it's good if the load balancer has built-in HTTP checks, proper monitoring each server for availability. On the other hand, if your network (router/switch) supports WCCP then no additional load balancer is needed as the load balancing you need is already in the network equipment and almost auto-configured.. If you are doing explicit configuratoin (manaul or auto discovered) then L7 is needed for load balancing if you want decent hit ratio, at least until intra-array CARP routing gets implemented...
